Level Up's Top Games of 2017

This year has been packed with fantastic games on all formats, some even going as far as to say its the best year yet for games. I found it next to impossible to pick ten so I have just listed my general fave games this year. I didn't get a chance to fully play some so I have put an honorable mentions list at the end, hopefully I will get more time this year! So here it is, my personal best games this year (in no particular order).

SteamWorld Dig 2 (Switch)

Fantastic graphics, sharp and snappy. A big improvement on the first (which was also great) and one of the most addictive gameplay loops in recent memory. A real standout in the Switch library.

Zelda Breath of the Wild (Switch)

Nintendo reinvented the wheel with this one. Turning the usual dungeon/new tool gameplay and turning it on it’s head to create the best Zelda game since Wind Waker!

Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

Going back to the open ended nature of Sunshine and 64, this new entry in Nintendo's biggest franchise provides fun in spades and proves there's still plenty of life (and new ideas) in the old plumber yet.

Horizon Zero Dawn (Playstation 4)

Fantastic technical achievements aside, this new IP provided a rich open world, a great main story and likeable characters in what is another strong new franchise for Sony.

Persona 5 (Playstation 4)

Stylish and visually interesting with an irreverent Japanese sense of humour. Packed with content, great characters and dungeon crawling. Essential if you like JRPGs!

What Remains of Edith Finch (PC)

A compelling story told through a beautifully realised world and fantastic writing. Quite short but an experience that is well worth playing and replaying.

Observer (PC)

Cyberpunk goodness with some great graphics and strong central characters. I would have preferred a bit more exploration, but this is one trippy gameplay experience.

Yakuza 0 (Playstation 4)

Absolutely mental in places (in the best way possible), a long and twisty story combined with some great combat mechanics and city exploration. Oh and I forgot the long list of fantastic mini games. The modern day Shenmue.

Sonic Mania (Switch)

Deliciously retro and aimed squarely at fans of the Mega Drive classics, Sonic Mania is a trip into the best levels from the first 3 games, remixed and refreshed with some genuinely genius moments.

Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice (PC)

Much has been said about this insight into mental illness and its fantastic central character portrayed by the brilliant Melina Juergens. Dark, intense and some fantastic graphics make this one of the best games this year.

The Evil Within 2 (PC)

A massive improvement on the first game, with some slick graphics and tighter controls. Playing like something closer to resident Evil 4, with tonnes of action and fantastic writing.

Wolfenstein The New Colossus (PC)

It has some of the most violent moments I have ever seen in gaming and its not for the faint of heart, but the central gameplay mechanics are addictive and fun. It also has some of the best dialogue this year.

Honorable Mentions

Cuphead (PC)

Assassins Creed Origins (PC)

Destiny 2 (PS4)

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)

Nioh (PS4)

Nier Automata (PS4)

Battle Chasers Nightwar (PC)

Golf Story (Switch)

Divinity Original Sin 2 (PC)

Uncharted The Lost Legacy (PS4)

Prey (PC)
